Music teaching objectives

In achieving the aims of the Music curriculum, pupils will:

ATTITUDES

  • Develop a love of music in an environment in which music is fostered and nurtured.
  • Develop an understanding that music is an important part of life.
  • Develop positive responses to opportunities that are provided for creating, re-creating and appreciating music.

SKILLS

  • Identify key elements of music such as: Rhythm, Pitch, Volume, Tempo, Dynamics Texture and Form. Recognise the musical terms to describe these elements. Recognise the instruments of the orchestra and of other groups.
  • Use correct vocal technique, breath control, tone, intonation and posture to sing on many, various occasions. Opportunities will be given for class performances, school-wide Church Services, a biennial music production and in small groups. Membership is encouraged to one of the four Choirs.
  • Perform on classroom percussion instruments, the recorder family, electric keyboards, extra-curricula learning of orchestral instruments. Opportunities to perform outside the classroom include assemblies, music evenings, inter-school concerts and community events. Small chamber groups are encouraged.
  • Create and improvise music using rhythm, pitch, texture and tempo.
  • Identify the pitch and value of notes and understand music directions of tempo, expression and interpretation. Notate and record.
  • Identify and analyse a variety of music works, choral and instrumental, from pre-Baroque to 21st Century and identify their forms.

KNOWLEDGE

  • Use the correct names for the orchestral families and individual instruments. Recognise the sounds of the orchestral instruments and how the sounds are produced. Recognise the instruments which make up different groups such as jazz, folk, brass band etc.
  • Experience live orchestral and other performances, have exposure to quality recordings and through these experiences develop the ability to critique and appreciate music performance.
  • Recognise different genres and styles through critical listening.
  • Understand how such styles developed and how their development was influenced by world events.
  • Have a broad knowledge of the major composers and their works. Understand the outside influences on composers and their compositions.
