A Choir for the Cathedral

'Established for the purpose of training boys for the Cathedral Choir and preparing them for higher schools.' 1881

The Cathedral Grammar School is New Zealand's only choir school and one of only two choir schools in the Southern Hemisphere, the other being in Sydney. As such, the school is a member of the Choir Schools' Association.

Founded on 16 May 1881, five months before the Consecration of Christ Church Cathedral, the school has educated every Cathedral chorister since then. The Cathedral choristers bring a special character to the school and, of course, with such a heritage, music plays an important part in the school life of every boy and girl at the school today.

Cathedral Choristers and Choral Scholarships
At any one time, there may be up to 24 full and probationary choristers at the school in Years 4-8.

Full choristers rehearse four mornings a week at school, Tuesday - Friday, 8.00-9.00am, and rehearse and sing Evensong at the Cathedral on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays 4.00-6.00pm. Regular Sunday services are sung at 10.00am and 5.00pm with rehearsals beforehand. Throughout the year, there are many other special services and events, ranging from concerts with NZ 'greats' like Dame Malvina Major and Hayley Westenra to the glorious Service of Nine Lessons & Carols to singing the National Anthem at test matches.

A Choral Scholarship may be awarded to a boy following a audition with the Cathedral Director of Music, and may vary in value from 15% to 100% of tuitions fees. Following a successful audition, a boy joins the Probationary Programme. If this goes well, after about a year or as period determined by the Director of Music, the probationer will be admitted as a full chorister.

Year 4-6 boys may audition at any time during the year, by appointment. Auditions for Year 3s are held in Term IV.

Enquiries about auditions, the Probationary Programme and Choral Scholarships should be made to the School Registrar, Mrs Linda Marsh.
